How much data do you need for a trip
For a week of maps, messaging and email, 3 GB is usually enough. If you watch a lot of video and social media, go for 10 GB or more.

What apps use
Rough numbers: actual use depends on video quality, settings and the app itself.
- Messaging: a few megabytes a day.
- A voice call in a messaging app: about 1 MB per minute, a video call 5-10 times more.
- Maps and navigation: tens of megabytes a day, unless you download a whole city map.
- Social media with photos and short videos: 0.5 to 1.5 GB per hour.
- HD video: 1.5-3 GB per hour.
How much to buy
- Light use (maps, messaging, email): 300-500 MB a day, 3 GB a week.
- Typical use (plus social media and photos): about 1 GB a day, 5-10 GB a week.
- Lots of video or a laptop hotspot: 2 GB a day and up.
How to save data
- Download offline maps of the city at home on Wi-Fi.
- Turn off video autoplay in social apps and app updates over mobile data.
- Turn off photo backup over mobile data.
If you run out
Some plans can be topped up from your account, and the plan description says so. If not, buy a new eSIM: it installs in a couple of minutes. Your account shows the data left, and we email you when it runs low.
