How to keep your number and get bank texts abroad
A data eSIM doesn't replace your SIM card. Your number stays in the phone and bank codes keep arriving as usual.

How it works
A phone with eSIM runs two lines: your SIM and the travel eSIM. Data goes through the eSIM, and your number takes calls and texts as long as your carrier has roaming in that country.
iPhone settings
- Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data: pick the eSIM.
- Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching so data doesn't move to your home SIM.
- Home SIM: data roaming off, the line itself on. That way it still gets calls and texts.
Android settings
- In SIM settings, set the eSIM for mobile data.
- Set your home SIM for calls and texts.
- Turn data roaming off for your home SIM.
Check before you go
- Whether your carrier has roaming in that country and what incoming calls cost. Incoming texts are free with most carriers, but it's worth asking.
- Whether your bank can send codes in its app instead of by text: then they arrive without roaming.
- If your home SIM has no signal on the trip, text codes won't arrive. Set up app sign-in with your bank before you leave.
